hen fish are caught, we will publish the photos here. All shots are linked to larger photos, so just click on them. Since I live on a river (the Mississippi) I probably have the largest variety of gamefish available at any time of the season. I ice fish in the winter, wade for walleyes in fast water in the spring, and use scent baits for catfish in the summer.

Fishing is a wonderful activitity from several perspectives. First, you get to commune with nature. Second, fish are good for you. Third, you get to travel to some interesting places and meet interesting people with whom you have a lot to talk about. And fourth, there are all kinds of equipment and accessories you can buy. I actually love to shop.

My favorite kind of fishing is light tackle and fly fishing. I would rather fly fish even if I catch nothing than any other kind of fishing. I've caught everything on fly rods except catfish. I've caught bluegills, largemouth, smallmouth, stripers, of course trout, but the fish I love to catch on fly rods the most are northern pike. In Canada, in the shallows, there's nothing like plunking a fly into a spot and watch a northern from 50 feet away knife through the water and grab it. And then it's the fight of your life.

Here's a great link to a movie I did in Canada.

Fun Photos and Stories from My Fishing Adventures

This is a photo taken in Minocqua, Wisconsin in June 2005. The fish is a smallmouth bass. I managed to catch several despite the brisk breezes that buffeted out boat. Casting ultralight tackle and a tiny Mepps Spinner with a 3/8ths inch rubber core weight about 3 feet ahead of the lure to get it down fast to the level the fish were suspended got me a fish almost ever cast. I stopped counting at eight. None were under a pound. All caught and released immediately.

Below are photos taken in August on the Mississippi River at Dubuque, my home town. My father-in-law Francis caught these two excellent catfish.

We went catfishing with Wicked Sticky, the jar bait my friend Mark Mihalakis makes, and it delivered. The river was low, and the catfish were hard to find, but the secret of catfishing is to use scent baits that bring the fish to you. I designed the label for this product by the way. Learn more by clicking on the jar.

Three nice eatin' size channel catfish. Behind me is the boat docs at Mud Lake and Arrowhead Marina where we keep our boat.

These two large mouth bass are from my friend's pond. Caught in the fall of 2004 with tandem spin bass lures. My father in law caught 3, and I caught 2, all similar in size.
